THIS WEEK IN ROCK

August 25, 2019

Final shows, landmark shows, epic residencies and more. It’s This Week In Rock, rock history as it happened.

#OnThisDay August 19, 1988
Elvis Presley’s electrifying version of ‘Hound Dog’ is revealed as the most played jukebox song of the past 100 years. The first jukebox appeared in 1889 and one spin of this rock’n’roll masterpiece will justify its enduring popularity. Go on – put another dime in the jukebox, baby!

#OnThisDay August 20, 1973
Bruce Springsteen kicks off a seven-night residency at Oliver’s in Boston, MA. He plays two 60-minute sets per night, which give some hint as to the epics that follow down the line. Check out this fantastic live reading of ‘Spirit In The Night’ from the same year.

#OnThisDay August 21, 1999
Manic Street Preachers headline the main stage at the V Festival in Hylands Park, Chelmsford. Their 17-song set kicks off with ‘Faster’ and climaxes with ‘A Design For Life’. Have a look at this footage of them playing ‘Tsunami’. And let us know your memories if you were there.

#OnThisDay August 22, 2003
Norwegian Elvis impersonator Kjell Henning Bjoernestad sets a new world record by singing the King’s hits non-stop for over 26 hours. The previous record holder was British fan Gary Jay who managed an impressive 25 hours, 33 minutes and 30 seconds. Still, you can’t beat the real thing, eh?

#OnThisDay August 23, 1970
Lou Reed plays his final gig with the Velvet Underground at Max’s Kansas City in New York. Working as a typist for his father for $40 a week, he later returns to music and scores a global hit in 1972 with ‘Walk On The Wild Side’. Did you ever see him live?

#OnThisDay August 24, 1948
Happy birthday to pioneering composer, performer and producer Jean-Michel Jarre. His breakthrough album, the influential ‘Oxygene’, has sold over 12m copies since its release in 1976 and helped pave the way for electronic music. Did you know that he was the first Western artist to play in the People’s Republic of China?

#OnThisDay August 25, 1975
Bruce Springsteen releases his third album, ‘Born To Run’. His commercial breakthrough, it peaks at No. 3 in the Billboard Top 200 and establishes the Boss as a major cultural force – a position he’s enjoyed ever since. There are many live versions to choose from, but we’re going for this incendiary version from Glastonbury 2009.
